  • I've often wondered at the poignancy of that famous first line and that famous last line being as he was killed in action shortly afterwards.

  • Magee did not die "in action" ... he was killed after his Spitfire collided with an RAF bomber trainer. Magee's flight had just let down out of the clouds and Magee had no time to react to the other aircraft. Magee did bail out but was too close to the ground for his parachute to deploy.

  • High flight was part of my child hood memories, even as a child It touched me. I was thrilled to find it again. This generation will never understand it. For me it was the 1960 version that I remember, and that lovely voice. It all comes back me Thank you

  • i suddenly had a flash of a book, orange and red covered, with - what? a stylized airplane? - climbing into the sky, the image embossed in silver. Did you get the same edition?

(Can't remember a thing that was inside it!)

  • Yes I couldn't agree more with this. Todays generation will never understand the impact this had on us in the 60's and even the 70's. Makes me sad to think of it that way...
