There's also a reason behind his many unique looks.

They gave "Jumpman" a hat because they couldn't get his hair to move realistically.

They gave him a moustache and an abnormally large nose to make it more noticable.

And his colored overalls made his arm movements more noticable.

Also, Mario started with red overalls and blue shirt like in this anime. However, when Mario Bros was released, they swapped. -c-
