replying to 3tristan, i think his behavior towards musicians just shows his inner insecurities and conflicts. to be honest i don't really care for his mozart despite so much fanfare to the contrary. i am still amazed at the intensity of his '66 tristan at bayreuth, but that's another story. great conductors are just people too and some people learn to NOT act like 5 year olds while others still have tantrums at 60-80 years old. nice to have walter as a grown-up example of what is possible

Haydn composed symphonies that are as musically developed as this symphony but they dont appear to me to be as profound as this one.
The last 3 symphonies were written in the space of 6 weeks. This is surely the only reason why the experts fail to refer to 'the last 4 symphonies' of Mozart.
Had those 3 been written say over a period of 2 years then surely the reference would be to 'the last four syms'
Each movement of this work is special.
