Bob wrote the tune "Bebop Charlie" for broadcaster Chuck Niles. Horace Silver wrote "The Hippest Guy in Hollywood" for Niles as well. Talk about honors.
Just saw this band by chance in LA at the Sheraton in LAX while waiting for a flight to Puerto Rico and it was amazing. What fantastic charts and unbelievable sidemen. I wish I'd of paid more attention to Mr. Florence's music in the past.
Bob was a neighbor of mine in Westlake Vlg., he and Evelyn used to come around and welcome me at Carmelos By The Freeway. I have taken a lot of still shots of the band, Nick Ciroli (deceased) was the drummer, and big Bob Cooper (deseased), i brought the band all beers during the break...all great players!
Charlie Loper and Bob McChesney on the same section! Now thats what I call a section. Especially with Loper playing lead and McChesney taking the solos!
My thanks to mkaiserme for posting the Bob Florence memorial concert videos. It's a shame that there are so few Limited Edition videos with Mr. Florence (I say Mr. out of respect). When the camera went around the band showing each musician and ended at the piano I wanted to cry.
