I personally like Marriot better than Plant. By the way, American garage band the Litter did a nice fuzzed out version of this song.

Steve's vocals were at their best when he was in his teens and early twenties. His voice deteriorated after that although his guitar playing improved greatly. One of the best and put the Jaggerss and Plants well into the shade - especially as he could sing and play well simultaneously. RIP Steve, me old mate !

I swear this is the last reply ;)

Personally I think the line-up Page, Beck, Moon, Entwistle, Hopkins, Marriott wouldn't last too long - to many guys with BIG attitudes. I'm happy how things came together.

You see SF were very popular band in UK and they were good mates. It was after Ogden's Nut Gone Flake LP (released in 1968 -6 weeks at No. 1 in UK) that some cracks started to show up. Jimmy didn't ask Steve again, I think he knew it would have been useless.
In fact he asked Steve again in the 80's to do a project- but then Marriott was so fed up with big record labels, suits etc. that he didn't want to get through it again. Oh and he also declined Page's offer for house producer job in Swansong.

this is a quote from Marriott's interview:
"Page, when he was playing bass with the Yardbirds at a gig in Paris, and Jeff Beck was with them -- they wanted to form a group and they asked me to come with them.I was very tempted but said "Nah that's bullshit" and didn't. But I thought they were great musicians."
As you see it wasn't like they didn't choose Steve, it was Steve who declined. Soon SF had No.1 hit with "All Or Nothing" and I think after this Marriott was out of Jimmy's reach.

Well, Page and Beck talked to Steve around May 66, but eventually he declined the offer. It's difficult to say how it was. Page said that Steve was full of glee and it was Don Arden who "changed Marriott's mind" and also threaten Jimmy. You know Don Arden (Sharon Osbourne dad in fact) had a Mafia connections, I think Page was very aware about it and knew he shouldn't mess with him.

Small Face's manager threatened Jimmy Page with breaking his fingers if he talked to Steve.
