This, to me, a person who knows little about dancing, appears to be technically brilliant. But, it also appears to lack any feeling or passion and they look like a pair of automatons. A gaucho on the pampas surely didn't dance the tango like this...It reminds me of an intense swimming lesson..

I'd rather suspected this was going to be the case. While the accompanying tuitional timing clips in respect of the waltz, quickstep, etc., are brilliant, this demonstration of the tango is far, far too removed from genuine "basic" to render it of much usefulness to the average dancer. Impressive dancing, of course, but useless from an instructional point of view. If they'd ever care to make another video, this time showing practical 'gold' syllabus figures, it would be much appreciated.

In a way, you are right that it is not strict 'lead and follow', as it would be in social dancing. International standard isn't meant to be a social dance. But I guarantee you that she is not guessing; he makes it unmistakably clear that they are going to promenade position.

Here I will disagree with you. Look on His Demo dances. You will see that in every given moment Lady has no choice, but to turn her head in direction he wanted. Reason will be different, Ineria of the body, shape, weigth transfer. Basic figures should not mean bad dancing. I want to see same demonstration for basic figures as for demo dancing.

That a not a chance that no one danc ebasic in competition, because it teaching become disconnected with dance development. No One dance Step -side -closed in waltz any longer, if anyone ever did. It if forward forward -close when turning. In case of Natural or reverce turns. It is even forward forward passing in change step. and term close is not entirelly correct. teachers will take this routines and teach them how they are. I believe word champions have responsibility to wide dancing public.

You are right that there is a nano difference between closed and promenade position. However, when the man turns HIS OWN head to promenade, there is a vibration in the partnership that the woman feels, and THAT is what tells her to turn her head to promenade position.
