Danny Kaye was such and still is a wonderful man! Well, he still is in my heart. It's so sad, he died before I was even born, before my parents were even married! I was born in the wrong time, should have been in the thirties, or 1700's at the earliest..though I would probably like to be in the thirties or forties more! I'm fans of all these older actors/ actresses! Michael Crawford, Danny Kaye, Charles Dance, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball...etc. and much more ! 'Sigh' born in the wrong time....

It is wonderful to see that this September 1981 NY Phil concert (the only one of his orchestra concerts that he would permit to be recorded) is in circulation. I knew DK quite well and was lucky enough to attend several of his concerts - and rehearsals - with symphony orchestras. He usually had 3 rehearsals with a major orchestra, and I can certainly confirm that he could not read music. I am a conductor myself and I attempted to catch him out on several occasions ... !! In fact I showed (cont)

(cont) ..several scores of the pieces he conducted to him and he was fascinated to look at them but clearly could not read the notes !! If any of DK's friends read this, I would love to be in contact ..... I would be happy to give more details of his rehearsals and how he prepared his concerts if anyone is interested ......

all done by ear - if you are a musician you would know how remarkable it is to conduct an orchestra AND gain their respect *without* reading music !!! Rather than say "4 after B ... blah blah", he rehearsed by singing exactly what he wanted them to do....
