yeah, but we sing it. what i meant was that we in the orthodox church dont use musical INSTRUMENTS to assist us in our hymns-just vocals

Some Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox Churchs use Organs and Coptic Churchs use gongs and cymbals etc.

really? thats fascinating! i went to a greek church once and they had an organ, but i thought that was just an anomoly. but ive never been to a russian church that used an organ. i didnt think that was possible!

One of my organist friends was invited by the Patriarch of Moscow to do a report on the Organs in all of the Russian Orthodox Churchs that had one, in Russia. It took 6 months and Russia was still under communist rule.

3 semaniaries in Moscow and St.Petersburg, 2 semaniaries in Stalingrad and 1 in Goukey had organs.

thats incredible! did he also witness it being used in the service? im curious as to how the organ was incorporated into the liturgy, given the orthodox preferance for the human voice

I doubt so. It was mainly for matinence and inspection. As far as I know the only time he went to liturgy was when their was no Catholic church in his area and those churchs did not have organs.
