The way she eases into this song with such little effort, and starts at a very low note and gradually levels up thru several octaves...just pure perfection. And not even that, she adds her melancholy touch to it...almost as if she is detached from reminiscing or recounting this lonely man...one of her true masterpieces!!
Am shamelessly shedding tears right now listening to Karen singing my Solitaire. And that in a public internet cafe. How mushy can some hearts like mine be!
Not too mushy . . . even "guys" can find themselves shedding a tear when Karen Carpenter is singing. Like so many others, I wish she was still here with us.
The message of this song at once depresses and strengthens me. I've been singing this every day since 1974. I even composed a violin arrangement of this and had it played by---while I sang to and for---the one that broke my heart, my violinist.
