In the final three seconds the Soviets threw the ball downcourt, and Aleksandr Belov made a lay-up as time expired for the final margin of 51-50.

I think the refs felt sorry for the Soviets being that Brezhnev would have had them shot if they lost. Everybody knows the Soviets were extorting the IOC, i mean, thats how those pinkos roll, man!
The Soviets were good, sergi belov could have played in the nba, we did not put our best players on this team.Still we should have won. the referees let the russians keep doing it till they got it right.
This is difficult to watch. The Americans did not use their advantage in quickness, and instead played a slowdown style which allowed the Russians to hang with the them. Coaching style lost this game. This one hurts. It should never come down to that fateful final ending. Iba was the wrong coach for this squad.
a true athlete knows that a game is a contraption of technicalities. the outcome would have been equally questionable had the US won. sloppy work by officials and game-staff made the ending of the game unclear. a true champion understands rules and rulings and knows their place as an athlete.
