Kurt Cobain was the guy John Lennon wanted to be.

the whole point was that the music was incredibly simple (like nursery rhymes they once said) but emotive. it was a deliberate break from the music of the "harley riding rock bands" of the late 80s/early 90s like GnR, with whom they refused to tour. Nirvana's success stemmed from how they made people feel, although the band was always uncomfortable with their mainstream success (the band, or at least Kurt, associated with outsiders not the mass audience they attracted).

The hype that surrounds Nirvana can be attributed to many things. But, when it comes to the music, Nirvana began gaining popularity in a time when music was lacking 'something.' At the end of the 80s, Nirvana was playing this simple, yet powerful music that was different from anything that came before. But, you being from Europe, and being of a young age, might have a hard time grasping the immensity of Nirvana's impact on modern music.

I don't understand the hype about Nirvana... I don't consider them to sound bad or something... but that music is so unbelievably simple ... people learn this song on guitar when they begin to play...
there is no variety... an the solo is no solo but a emotionless played number of slow notes...
I mean its hearable but thats it.
There are so much unknown bands, who deserve famousness so much more than Nirvana...
