Well, I think it's only a simulation. Not a real thunder...what do you think about it? Even an expansive camera with a lot of FPS, you can't see much detailed and slowly like this.

I'm not sure the path of least resistance applies here does it? My understanding is the negatively charged air particles (ions) simply connect in a stepped leader fashion. It steps until it is grounded by a chosen positive streamer when then creates a huge current called return stroke.

Please explain what you mean.

In the very begining, the electricity is trailing across the sky, it chooses the easiest path, the one that is the least resistant. eventually it finds its way to the ground.
