Christopher Hailey ("Franz Schreker, 1878-1934: A Cultural Biography") writes:
The caesura the war had imposed upon German cultural life had, if nothing else, encouraged "distance." It was a period of forced reflection, a time during which many pre-war enthusiasms grew stale, while that had once seeed alien took on new meaning. Many of the qualities of Schreker's music and librettos which had so shocked and confused earlier audiences had now acquired a compelling allure.
For a war-weary audience the raw, fantastic, visionary qualities of Schreker's opera, with its themes of anxiety, renunciation, loss, and yearning for the unattainable, had a special relevance.
Alex Ross writes: ..Kent Nagano conducted the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester of Berlin, applying the same priestly devotion to Schreker that he brings to Mahler and Messiaen....Michael Volle was a charismatic and brutal Tamare. Above all, Anne Schwanewilms was transfixing as Carlotta. With her hotly expressive stage presence and coolly beautiful soprano voice, she caught the ambiguities of Carlotta's character and, by extension, all the fire and ice of Schreker's world

For those of you who want to travel to Los Angeles, the LA Opera is performing this opera in concert version in the spring of 2010. It was originally to be staged, but the company is short on money.
Schwanewilms is the best you can get for a ticket today... Simply great... the nicest voice ive heard in years.... Light... as the best romantic tradition... dramatic and a very good actress... what else? Thanks for posting a clip from a singer, that has to be listened to...
Unfortunately Mina this music was buried by the Nazi's in WWII as "degenerate art" and it just only resurfaced about 30 years ago in the late 70's The whole story is racy by today's standards and so when it was written in 1918 it was really racy and though popular may not have seen much performance until now anyway.
I saw Schwanewilms live in Berlin as Senta she absolutely amazing. Such an amazing voice. Huge and secure and beautiful dramatic voice I hope to hear her many times again.
