You really cannot understand it, unless you've dealt with addiction yourself. There is only 1 "lesser stuff", that's weed. Anything else is hard serious shit. But ultimately, it's a means to escape the pains of a harsh reality, and a damn powerful escape.
Ultimately, it either kills you, or you deal with it, and go through the withdrawal.
