Mike Stern sticks out from other guitarists because of his tone. Not only does he utilize tone electronically but he also manipulates tone merely with his technique and playing style. I'm not vouching for accuracy but I've been told sax is the closest instrument to the human voice, and you see just about every saxophonist in bop and fusion use their tone tricks to their advantage in solos. Guitarists need to learn more about using tone for vocal emotion instead of sounding like a machine.
