True, but Rit isn't what I'd call a traditional jazz player. As much as I like Jazz, and the old stuff, it won't sell these days. Hence, why Eric, and all the other guys make smooth jazz. Problem is, 5-10 years from now, there will only be a handful of "smooth jazz" stations in the US. Therefore, sadly, I think true musicianship is fading away. Outside of jazz, have you noticed that there are VERY few 'artists' of any genre today with true talent?
It's just how times change. I'm a former sax player (had to sell my horns after being laid off), and also love rock (like Metallica, Disturbed, etc.). Even in that genre, it's nto what it used to be. These days, there are no superstar musicians, only average to decent and those who are superstars, won't have "fame" unless they change they're style to what sells. All smooth jazz stations market the same artists, Peter White, Boney James, Kenny G, Jessy J. It's all corporate marketing now.
Valid point. I do enjoy some of the new kids of today that are hot on their instruments, it's amazing that there are still those few that are aiming to keep it moving forward...besides the fact Coltrane and some others died and left the genre in slump for a period(correct me if I'm wrong on that). Real Music needs to start a revolution, hands down. I hope to help contribute to the cause! Definitely nothing wrong with that if the heart is in it. :-)
Agreed! I got into lessons this year, and was in it a couple of years ago, but finally made it permanent. If anyone here knew how big of a transformation I've had since taking lessons, everyone would be taking it too! And yes, even those that have problems with Sight Reading, you can learn it If You Practice! :-)
