I was a young kid, fresh out of sixth grade the Summer my parents took me to hear Billie in person at the old Royal Theater in Baltimore in 1956. She was not in her best form that night, but when Nrorman Granz put this together and I saw it on TV in '57, I was just floored. My four favorite sax players and Bilie all in one place together. Who could ask for anything more?
Entire video is wonderful. Best part is Billie's expressions during Lester's solo. So thankful that the camera captured her during the solos. Two choruses for Eldridge seems to fit just fine. Given the way he built the solo. Just my opinion. I thought I was familiar with this recording but I didn't remember Mulligan. I really enjoy the pepper he adds to this. Anyway, it's all so beautiful.
