I saw a longer version (the full version?) of this at the Hirshorn in Washington DC. It's really quite striking on a large screen, and the audio of grinding and crunching ice adds a lot to the atmosphere. Strongly recommended.
i found it far more moving as an actual film (at least i think it was). something about the grainy flicker and the better sound - the rumble of the ship thru the ice. GvdW is totally nuts! so is the world! i am humbly awed by his simple artistry.
and a comment i can't resist. isn't it amusing how youTube's "related videos" engine thinks that this has something to do with ice breakers? oh yah, i want to watch more ice breakers, nice big machines crunching thru the ice....
It's just best to interpret what this movie is about yourself, rather than ask someone else what it's supposed to be about. What you're seeing is literally "a huge ship following a man walking on ice". Take it however you will and roll with it.
