Please correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the statutes less to do with taking away Irish culture from the Gaels than they were to stop English settlers adopting Irish ways ("more Irish than the Irish") and to enforce English culture upon English settlers, which failed anyway. I'm also a bit unsure about the story of straight arms to fool soldiers. Irish music and customs were widely practised in England in 18th and 19th century and Irish music was common in English theatres and music halls

I think you'll find a lot of the time it is just the way it is played. Folk/trad players tend to refer to it as a 'fiddle'. There are some specific instruments known as 'fiddles', rather than 'violins', but in this case it's the same instrument.

A violin has strings and a fiddle has "strangs".

Hey sweet, lol I'v bin having some troubles, people keep trying to tell me what a "fiddle" is and its driving me insane, and either they lie or they think they know, I wanna know so I can know, not to run around sayin "I know what a fiddle is".

So would a fine musician like yourself care to explain the deal of a fiddle to a VEERY interested kid instead of lettin a bunch of tards tell him wrong?

It's a violin, used for folk-music purposes, essentially.

Also, this is friggin' awesome.
