There has never been a White Singer ( Of European Descent) who can sing like Karen Carpenter, she is a legend! Suave, smooth her voice could ice a cake, lol! Of course Ella was amazing!

This was not filmed a month before Karen's passing. Karen died in February, 1983. This special aired in May, 1980.

She died a month after this video from the anorexia too. Wow...look how sick she was. Back then, no one really knew about this disease.

NO one sang this song as well as these two. Now, i'm not saying George Benson's or Leon Russell's are not good, because each one has different arrangements, but Karen's and Ella's come from a woman's perspective, and somehow, when the women sing it, it's not so broken, but the emotion is still as strong. I simply prefer Karen's version, because it's not so all over the board, but straight forward, and I feel that her voice is still the best that ever was recorded (just my personal opinion).

How well said, I couldn't quite put my finger on it until you so succintly summed up the difference btwn Benson's & Russell's arrangments and that of KC and Ella's.
And absolutely Karen's voice (IMHO) is best over "recorded".
