The reality is that the politicians get away with these lies because our culture is steeped in sexism and racism. If the planet survives we will one day look back at this kind of GDP focused talk about the economy as an era of bigotry and ignorance imposed by those who make a profit off destruction. Talk about the GDP will seem as oppressive as the pre civil rights era does to us now.

I can see the feminism is troubling the commenter immediately beneath mine. Unfortunately he lets it get in the way & so misses the entire point. Maybe he's avoiding it, or even trying to dismiss it. But why be so hostile to reality. It just is what it is, but is more malleable than we think, subject to positive change & repair. The UN is a complex thing, but that the UNSNA was written upon a How To Pay For War pamphlet, dictating any member nation had 2 base its domestic economy on ascetic...

...war measures that nix'ed any peace dividend demanded at war's (WW2) end. So keynesian social programs were begrudged & left vulnerable to coopting into the service of corporations & sabatoge otherwise. They (framers of UNSNA) confined value to death, really, in forms of trees, fish and other animals readied for the point of sale. Forests & all life on sea & land has no value except that which we people assert. We must forge a future, an indefinite one for generations to come. It's plausible
