Excerpt from George Szell conducting The Cleveland Orchestra
"Andante con Moto" from Beethoven Symphony #5
From: VAI DVD 4271 George Szell, "One Mans Triumph -The Cleveland Orchestra"
This 1966 program from the archives of the Bell Telephone Hour series profiles Szell and his relationship with the Cleveland Orchestra. Among the highlights are segments showing Szell rehearsing the Orchestra in works of Brahms (Academic Festival Overture), Berg (Violin Concerto, with the Orchestras concertmaster, Rafael Druian, as soloist), and Beethoven (Symphony No. 5). In another segment, Szell coaches three apprentice conductors, among them a young James Levine at the threshold of his illustrious conducting career. The program ends jubilantly with footage of Szell and the Orchestra in actual performance, playing the final movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

When I left in '87, it was beyond a hell-hole. Coming back in late summer, 95 and early fall of 2009, I felt that certain parts had completely redeemed themselves. Where I lived, near Severance Hall, was much worse than '87. Looked like Nagasaki 1 day after the bomb. But there were other parts that had improved 1000%, incl. the downtown area. Those were my impressions, having lived through a terrible period for 12 years. Manhattan was a breath of fresh air for me, after I left.

That is hilarious that you said Cleveland is a "fabulous city." What do you base that on because I only moved out of that crap hole a year ago and it was, well, a crap hole. Intolerant, dirty, poor, and in shambles. I will give it credit, however, for an outstanding park system and for exceptional medical care. Beyond that, there is little in Cleveland worth anything. However, you are free to try to convince me otherwise.

Yes, I knew the name, but was never in the hall in his presence. I arrived there in 1971, John Mack in 1965. So he is the only oboist I knew going there 36 times/yr. subscription. Slow mov't of Brahms B-flat piano concerto; Strauss Concerto, and on an on; these were sublime renderings of those solo parts. Consummate musician, by anyone's standard in the world. I was privileged to hear this man play on a weekly basis. Remembering those performances as though they occurred yesterday.

You would be surprised. Cleveland has completely reinvented itself. And that has nothing to do with the Cleve. Orchestra.
It is now a really fabulous city, albeit not as large as when it was a dirty steel town.

That is true, I lived there during that period.
Maazel & Bloom did not like each other. Upon arriving in Paris at Orchestra Nationale de France or Orchestra de Paris (can't remember), Bloom sat in 1st position. That fall, Lorin Maazel was appointed principal cond. of that orchestra. First rehearsal, Maazel said something like, "Well, hello, Myron."
Probably not well received! LOL.

Don't forget Mack's forerunner, Marc Lifschey. That man's tone was incredible. Found a warmth of tone from the tip of the reed, rather than the back. What am I talking about though, the entire orchestra was incredible, just look at this!
