In March 2007 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London we hosted an evening of animation related events which I took as an opportunity to make some more examples of my Phonographantasmascope, an extension of the Zoetrope principle.

It is all live action and works by using the shutter speed of the camera rather than the rather irritating stroboscope methods other 3D Zoetropes use.

Please excuse my waffling over the top of it, I was speaking for four hours to a constantly revolving set of people.

I imagine it wouldn't work without a camera. It needs a shutter to break the image into "frames". A normal Zoetrope uses slits in the card, this one uses the shutter speed of a camera. So the naked eye would just see blurry spinning, no animation.

Lighting it with a strobe would be one way of doing it, which I'd like to see in real life. Camera-caught footage can't show the difference.

It's lovely but would be nicer to use a strobe so you could see it live. Or, if you must, use the slitted card Zoetropes use. There's something kinda funny about a Victorian toy that only works when you look at it through an electronic camera.

But apart from that, the little hurdling guy's beautiful, I don't know if anyone ever made 3D real-life Zoetropes before. A nice idea might be to make 32 little plasticine dudes, or plastic or whatever, and animate those.

But whats nice and special about it is that you can see it live, as it's happening...you don't need to be recording or have any post production work done before you see fluid motion.
