Spooky Tooth - That was only yesterday 1969

Spooky Tooth was an English progressive rock band from the late 1960s.

Band members in 1969:
Mike Harrison - keyboards, vocals
Gary Wright - organ, vocals
Luther (Luke) Grosvenor - guitar, vocals
Andy Leigh - bass, vocals
Mike Kellie - drums

(After Spooky Tooth's split in 1974, Wright continued his solo career, culminating in "Dream Weaver." The single peaked at No. 2 for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976, and went gold)

Lyrics:
Guess I'll have to get out of this town
No sense in my waiting around
Only thing left for me here is pain
She's gone for sure now why pretend
Left last night with a friend
Leaving not a word that would explain

That was only yesterday
But will I ever face tomorrow
She took away what I'd had
And returned it full of sorrow

That was only yesterday
Will I ever face tomorrow
She took away what I'd had
And returned it full of sorrow

I think I better find somewhere
A place where I won't care
I need some time to hide my shame
Was only just one day ago
Found what I'd been searching for
Had left town on a late night train

And that was only yesterday
But will I ever face tomorrow
She took away what I'd had
And returned it full of sorrow

That was only yesterday
Will I ever face tomorrow
She took away what I'd had
And returned it full of sorrow
That was only yesterday
Will I ever face tomorrow
She took away what I'd had
And returned it full of sorrow

(Instrumental)

I'd listen to Spooky Tooth, but I get scared.

You didn't mention in the intro that Luther Grosvenor went on to be Aerial Bender in the post Mick Ralphs Mott The Hoople

Those of us that grew up in the late 60s &early 70s never took for granted how freakin good this and 99% of the rest of our music was, Truly gotta feel bad for kids today they have so very little music that will stand the test of time . Great Post....

You want to hear Redding as an influence among these singers? Check out Frankie Miller. My favorite is his version of Lennon's "Jealous Guy"--there are 2 recordings on YouTube.

Actually, he picked up the Ariel Bender moniker when he joined Stealers Wheel.

I'm reminded of the fact that both Paul Rodgers and Dan McCafferty (singer from Nazareth) site Otis Redding as an influence. Redding must have been like a 'god' in the Borders

Not really--the Northerners (and Scots too) often had a native feel for souly American music (country as well as r & b), and there's a great tradition of strong-voiced Northern & Scottish soulsters--think Eric Burdon, Paul Rodgers, Frankie Miller. Mike Harrison fits right in. Gary Wright brought a little bit of that dramatic NY/NJ organ-based sound of his day (think the Rascals, Vanilla Fudge, the Hassles). The fusion of the intensity makes sense. (I'm from NJ and lived 13 yrs in Edinburgh.)
