Interestingly enough, the two are performing together again in 8 days, so I don't think they have a sour relationship, just an awkward one lol.

The recording of this song was said to be pretty awkward too because apparently Aretha Franklin had been led to believer the Lennox was a lesbian and the song's message was more about lesbianism than women's rights. The two remained distant in the session, but complimented each other wonderfully in interviews about one another. There's also word that Aretha was offended that Lennox only knew "Respect" from Aretha's catalog.

The song's producer said that the recording of this song at Aretha's house was really awkward, as the two didn't seem to have the same principles and that the filming of this video took place right after Annie Lennox had a photo session, where the photographer was gay. Aretha assumed Lennox was a lesbian, and it made Aretha question the song's meaning a lot more. After all, since Aretha is not a lesbian why would she sing a song about it?

The lyric "The inferior sex have got a new exterior" was changed from "The inferior sex is now the superior" as a result of a disagreement of Aretha over the song's message. Tina Turner was originally offered to do this duet, but declined as she didn't agree with the message. Aretha is quoted for saying "I'm old-fashioned. I like a guy who can romance a girl. I like to be wined and dined, all that good stuff"

Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox will be performing together at the 25th Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert. I wonder if they'll be performing this song. There was a lot of rumors circulating that Annie Lennox was a lesbian. There were live concerts of this song by Annie Lennox where people sung along with it as "Sisters are doin it to themselves", and apparently ARetha Franklin thought Lennox was a lesbian and there was some kind of tension during the recording of this vid.
