I've heard this piece performed live in the UK. A brilliant, ethereal and amazing work.

I'd say most classical composers are true artists...Schumann for example shows a great deal of emotion, check out his compositions for Dichterleibe...

This is absolute trash, sorry to break it to you, it actually hurts to listen to. How you can possibly listen to this for longer than 10 seconds as the above poster said is beyond me.

That being said, it's whatever floats your boat, but he's entitled to his opinion. It does sound like scratching a plate.

How can you say this is trash? Have you ever heard sounds and soundscapes in particular, used like this before? I am performing a Saariaho piece for cello and flute soon, and only when you realise the subtlety written into the piece can you appreciate it. You cannot compare this to Schumann.

I have, as I said earlier. These soundscapes sound like cheap knives cutting through a steak and grinding on a porcelain plate.

You are definitely right though, you cannot compare this to Schumann. For one, Schumann has melodies, harmonies, and polyphony. This, on the other hand, as you said, just uses "interesting" tone color. You yourself are even describing it as a sort of never-been-done-before "musical experiment".

Sorry if I offended you, but my opinion stands.

What makes the use of tone colour any less valuable than melodies and harmony? I imagine if the use of texture or tone colour as a motivic tool was pioneered in Schumann's time, he would have taken advantage. This is in no way an experimental piece either, I just said It is new and to most peoples ears, unheard of. Also, why should music have to be pleasant? If all music was simply to please the senses, as opposed to challenging the intellect, we'd live in a very stale world.
