i think your simplifyig the difference between liberal and lefty. left wingers tend to want to construct a system and institutions that encourage people to be brotherly. libeals (especially economic liberals) tend to encourage freedom at all costs. and right wingers construct a national identity. of course there are diff variatios n the theme

You could look at it as left and right being economic ideals, and liberal and authoritarian being about society couldn't you? Sort of l&r on the x axis, and liberal and authoritarian on the y axis?

there are too many divergent types of political thought to simplify too much. they all have their social and economic aspects. social position is usually defined in many ways by economic position etc
