As Philip Pullman himself said, this trilogy "doesn't need the scale of the movie screen, it needs the length of a TV series." As Pullman, I hope one day HBO will do the same with these books as they have done with Game of Thrones.

I'm reading the books now, and never saw the movie (tho I know it was disappointing hence I'm reading the books first), but lack of detail and depth? I would say that it is clearly written in a way that can be easily read by younger readers, but the central theme and all that it implies are no children material. It deals with themes that many question themselves with, themes that most children won't be familiar with, but that eventually will. Depth is not what it lacks, just fame might be (imo).
