Well, travelling matte F/X were around in the 30's, but it really didn't develop into Chroma-keying until they started using color film and green didn't become a popular color until the late 80's or early 90's, but I get your point. The Effect could have very been easily keyed for Radiers. The decision to use an "actual" boulder on a track was to convey more realism...and it worked.
