From Guinea, Ali Bangoura was born into a family of professional artistes and has been dancing and playing the djembe since he was 7 years old. He underwent formal training in traditional music, dance and choreography, and was selected to join his national troupe - Les Ballets Africaine - at the age 15. In 1981, his government awarded him sponsorship to travel across West Africa to learn about the different music and dance traditions and to research the varying cultures of the region
