Jewish accent?? Sounded to my ears like a west London, Acton Town accent.. which is slightly different from a Shepherds Bush accent.. and not to be confused with a White City one. :-))
The shortness of the song is one talking point. another is the affected Jewish accent which cheekily matched the lyrics playing a big part in making the song bigger than it would otherwise have been. Put a smile on all our faces then.
Well, it takes one to know one and I am one (although not that observant if I'm typing this on Rash Hashana) and in my school where one third of the class was Jewish the "What Do You Want" East End Jewish trader accent was an oft repeated source of humour and imitation.
Jewish definitely. Compare it to his voice in other songs then look at some clips (on here) which incorporate Jewish characters from Jewish characters of the time from Sitcoms like "Till Death Us Do Part" oe "The Rag Trade."
Buddy Holly? At that time there was a big thing about why our stars had to sing with American accents.
"Affected" as in contrived; but I posted "affected" instead of "effected" lol, and given that Helen Shapiro and Bob Dylan etc don't sing like that, definitely effected.
