[DUBAISESSION.COM] By Mohammad Al-Ghazzi BAGHDAD, April 9 (KUNA) -- Practically, Baghdad had not fallen in the military sense when the allied troops burst into the densely-populated city on April 9, 2003, for most Iraqis declined from fighting for defense of the regime of dictatorship. What had literally and actually fallen was the statute of the dictator, Saddam Hussein, along with his terror regime. It was the first time that the symbol of Saddam was brought down. Certainly, it would not be the last crushing of a dictator in the human race history, worldwide. Mandi Fahmi, an American journalist of Iraqi origin, said she was stunned at the rapid and humiliating fall of Saddam's regime, after many years during which he enforced himself as a sacred God. What Mandi did not realize was the fact that when the Iraqis kicked and spit on the statutes and other symbols of the regime that they actually assaulted and expressed their anger at three decades of repression and torture. That deep anger was manifested in the picture of Abu Tahseen, a grey-haired, haggard-faced Iraqi, who expressed his anger by beating a large picture of the hateful dictator with his shoes -- shoes that have become a symbol of getting rid of the horrific times. The April 9 has become the date marking the liberation of the Iraqis after a long period of time of hardships, ending with ten years of international curbs. The Iraqis are celebrating the fifth anniversary of the downfall of the regime, whose ruling figures had lived a luxurious life, while the majority of the people suffered from oppression, poverty and an out-dated infrastructure. Many Iraqis, particularly the Kurds, had long suffered from lack of basic services and utilities, such as water and power. President Jalal Al-Talabani has affirmed that re-construction and renovation of the infrastructure will last for a long period of time, as a result of negligence by Saddam's leadership. The masses, who had suffered from poverty and oppression for long years, had embarked on wide-scale robberies when ouster of Saddam was declared. An illegal act that remained largely understandable, considering the circumstances and the experience of being impoverished for too long. The liberation of Iraq was a great victory, but some Iraqi officials and eminent figures criticized the Americans for "certain blunders," namely the dissolution of the army, an option that should have been avoided to help in the efforts to restore order. The major challenge facing the Iraqis remains, formation of a national unity leadership, to sooth the wounds for good and pave way for a normal life and a regular, stable state.
