Ok people put yourself in his shoes... Stan thinks of Spider-man but does not design it/draw it, Ditko does. An architect thinks/designs a structure/building, but the construction workers build it. All the construction workers are therefore co-creators of a building they never even thought of doing. I'm not saying they should not get credit for making the design come to life, but he who designs it should get most of the credit, if not all. IMHO
Coming up with AN idea of Spider-Man is one thing. Finalizing THE concept of Spider-Man is another.
Stan qualifies that in disclaiming, had Ditko not come up with his interpretation of Spider-Man, then SL would have created a Spider-Man that failed.
Given that comic books, unlike novels, rely on VISUAL INTERPRETATION, there should be no hesitation on Lee's part, no moment to engender confusion, that Ditko IS the co-creator.
Stan Lee: Concept, origin, original stories/fleshing out creation.
Steve Ditko: Design and later story creator.
The thing here with Stan is that he seems GENUILY sorry that he thinks the way he does. I am convinced here that he's not trying to bash Ditko, but rather seems either soaked up in the attention or just a bit ignorant of his feelings. He's not ignorant in the fact that he diesn't want Ditko to recieve credit. Only a war of two sides are here, and opinions just conflict.
Stan Lee is completely correct, especially in terms of commercial work and *especially* comic books in the 60's.
Ditko is a genius, no doubt about it-- and he's one of the few comic artists who really can be called a visionary, IMHO-- but in that setting, he was essentially a hired contractor. You agree to do work in that way and you're selling it. That's just how it works.
Stan Lee is a fake....his "marvel method" of creating characters is the method of thievery....it's not a coincidence that hes the co creator of a cast of characters from a variety of talented artists..that needed him? to help create plots, stories, and characters for books? whatever....hes a crook and robbed multiple people.....Jack Kirby worked from home! and created new characters and worlds through out his life and never needed Stan Lee...
Stan Lee was just a scumbag that got lucky by using the imaginations of his own employees....his plan worked.....because i don't know one artist that is completely out of ideas and has no form of imagination....that's just ridicules.....as an artist my self i have run into people like this and its a shame that there out there fooling people int believing that scamming peoples imagination is creation and owner ship...these artist are receiving nothing, while he has it all??? ..open your eyes
Uh, Stan wouldn't have got shit had he not negotiated with Marvel. No one is denying that Kirby or anyone else didn't do their part. The reason why Kirby and the others didn't get their deserved credit was the fact that they never took the cases to court or never discussed it with Marvel or discussed. This happens all the time in the industry. Bill Finger for example never fought to receive his proper credit for co-creating Batman. Blame it on the writers/artists' lack of foresight, not Stan.

Lee's hesitation confirms Ditko's lingering criticism.
Sad.
