more engines at www.indianarog.com A recent (2007) acquisition of a new design by Karsten. Sort of mimics the SteamBall/Heron's engine in this collection, but presented in a Victorian looking lat...

i wonder if it could spin fast enough to get off the ground like a helicopter (though it would only be a novelty)..

i think that'd be worth a view on youtube :P

I doubt it would lift off at any speed as it does not have the lifting ability of a helicopter blade...definitely worth a video if it did happen!!!

Any high speed rotation can create lift, with the right propeller & weight ratio, simple.

THIS turbine never could. It has been designed to look awesome and spin very fast. You'd have to come up with a drastically different design with flight being the design goal from the very start.

Heron was so close to the industrial age, he just needed to attach some gears!!!
