Steve Reich.
The Minimalist composer Steve Reich, who became a major player in the 1960s, celebrates his 70th birthday this year.
Here the man and his music are profiled, with special attention paid to the Daniel Variations, his most recent piece about the murdered American journalist Daniel Pearl and Music for 18 Musicians.
Brian Eno, Michael Nyman and Alex Paterson from The Orb testify to his far-reaching influence.

In Simon Shama's Discourse/documentary on the History of art (BBC) he mentions about Picasso's picture of war damaged Spain there's a great part where an SS officer asks him if the he did a picture on a postcard lying on the table, Picasso said "No you did, take it as a memento", now that's class! Could this be classed as Musique concrete?
I saw the U.S. premiere of "Daniel Variations." I thought the premise was moving, but I wasn't excited by the piece. There were four grand pianos and four vibraphones onstage, so the instruments were so LOUD LOUD LOUD the whole time, and I couldn't hear the vocalists except peripherally.
I'm not a big fan of Reich's later vocal pieces (except "Proverb") - they're almost too bloated and ponderous to my ear. His recent instrumental ensembles (such as "Sextet" and "City Life") seem more elegant.
That said, though, the "Double Sextet" that eighth blackbird premiered and toured last year might be a return to form. I've only heard short excerpts, but I like them very much.
Anyway, thanks a lot for posting this show, and best wishes! (Sorry for all the comments...)
