In 2006 Oxfam staff travelled around the country and asked passers-by a selection of questions to get an idea about the public's attitudes towards poverty in the UK. The film reveals some of the prejudices and misconceptions that exist; the sort of prejudices and misconceptions Oxfam is working to overcome. Have your say: www.oxfam.org.uk/ukpovertypost

What are the statistics for the UK? Does anybody know any rough figure? In Mexico, roughly 2/3 of the population is poor. Perhaps 15% live in absolute misery. Living in a country where education and health are public lessens the burden for the poor. The Third World: Latin America, Africa and Asia have the worst problem. Africa has it worst, Infant mortality rates are still very high (over 100) and the life expectancy is below 50. Greetings from a middle-class worried Mexican.
It's a major problem everywhere. I feel sorry for those people trapped under the radar without any means of recovering. One more thing, where do those women in the shop get off? How sheltered a life must one live to be that blind to this sort of problem?
When you grow up in a middle class or a rich neighborhood, you fall into the trap of believing everyone's middle class. You'd be amazed. I have friends here in Mexico, who believe poor people want to be poor, and don't have the faintest idea how 2/3 of our population live.
I thought this was a great video. It clearly expressed the common misconceptions of a county's population and the consequences of having a faulty system of government.
