Is this device or something like it available on the market yet ? If not, where can you get hold of this inventor so you can get him to build you one ? I think every house-hold should have one of these so when they play loud music they don't disturb their neighbours!
I saw this show about ten years ago. Its an awesome idea but is anywhere using this yet? like clubs etc? I can see the military / secret service having use for this.
This is a well documented phenomenon known as "the Tomorrows World effect". Any brilliant idea that gets an airing on this show with the sub note, "And will be available in the next # years." soon disappears from public view. The only time this hasn't happened is when they previewed Compact Discs. Probably one of the reasons this show got canceled. Regarding the Sound Spot Light, how did it handle bass?
The Audio Spotlight does not currently reproduce bass below 350 Hz well. As a result, the audio track is produced - equalized and mixed to eliminate most of these tones. To create a more dynamic acoustic environment, the low tones can be added back into the space with a subwoofer.
That sort of defeats the purpose of directional sound, right? Subwoofers are undirectional... Some bleeding into other zones must occur... Where did you get that quote from? (saves me a trip...)
Technology is fun for scientists I am sure. Sadly some freaking meglomaniac will use it for something wrong. Oh wait the military already has things like theses.oops. Nothing like being controlled in martial law with fun sounds eh?
This is certainly not 'new' as claimed, I read about using modulated ultrasonics to beam sound being done fifteen or twenty years ago. He may be the first to commercialise it, perhaps.
The energy required to disassemble and hold apart the fundamental forces of the object whilst transmitting would be phenomenal = it would be equivalent to E=mc^2 for the mass of the object at least - it would be like transporting and containing a nuclear explosion inside a beam of some sort. The computational power required to hande all the information would make the DNA genetic code look like a shopping list!
To transmit this 'plasma' or 'soup' of particles in an organised way without becoming 'tangled' up in an 'energy' beam, along with the necessary information for reassembley somehow decoded into the 'beam' and later restructuring those fundamental particles and forces to an exact copy of the original material object, would be some feat!
For these reasons ... and NASA's budget, we won't be seeing such a device anytime soon! No doubt papers exist speculating on the theory of the task as this would be the ultimate form of travel and space rockets would be redundant along with any other propulsion engine.
