The first 9 minutes of a 47 minute film based on interviews with lecturers in Further Education. The film counters the current limited view of reading and writing as just 'basic skills'.
It reports research in which subject and vocational lecturers explored the varied social and professional practices of reading and writing which their students use in their daily lives, and need for their studies and careers.
The findings offer a valuable framework for teachers and awarding bodies to make the reading and writing within the curriculum more useful for learning and/or more relevant to students' intended careers.
The film comes with a 38 page colour booklet with the framework and further information. It is intended as a resource for professional development, teacher education and policy review.

I feel this project shows the importance of helping students make strong, positive connections between learning and careers/extracurricular activities. Work-based learning, learning by doing and input from employers can help young people see their education in a wider context.
