it just freaked out. and it continued to freak out for about two years until one day i decided to have it freak out onstage during a live performance - at which point it immediately started working again.

nice! I have a little yamaha keytar that's been doing the same sort of thing lately: it freaks out for a minute and then is suddenly fine... I actually kind of dig it.
ps any idea where I could get a raagini digital tanpura? I think its made by the same company
