Oh my God!! How refreshing to hear a baritone. Seems like every male classical singer wants to sing as a countertenor. I find this performance a gem!!!
The concert platform has always the medium whereby singers can perform music that they would not otherwise. Wagnerians sing Handel, Mozartians sing late Verdi - all a joy when done with artistry. As here. (My Gott - he's gorgeous!)
He is one of the greats: there seems to be, and has been, an obsession with tenors....it is great to hear a great bari every now and then, and Dmitri is one of them, no contest!
Oh, i don't like this.. It's a song for a counter and should be sang fine and quiet- heartful.. And i don't like his theatralic gestures with his arms. He should sing maybe opera of Wagner or whatever, but that is not good for him..
You think Jochen Kowalski has an angelic timbre? I'm sorry... but he's more of an Alto... He could even be considered as an alto... not even countertenor...His timbre is so powerful, he doesn't use falsetto... If you want a kind of 'angelical' countertenor voice you can go for Jaroussky...Not Kowalski...
Actually, Kowalski is exactly an alto and he sings in his natural unbroken voice. There's no room for all the details in one short comment. So, all altos and falsettists approximately can be described as countertenors. Even Kowalski himself didn't mind being called like that in his later interviews. His timbre can be powerful and have an angelic colour at the same time. It's how I hear it. I find PJ's voice too sweet and lack of emotion, expression and any power. Beautiful, yes, but not angelic.
