Beethoven (Part 7 of 18)

Leonore (Fidelio) is a great opera. Maybe the most glorious finale of an opera I've ever heard.

Pity he only found it in him to write just the one.

coincidentally, Magic Flute was Beethoven's (and Goethe's) favorite Mozart opera

the actual title is Bagatelle in A minor. "fur elise" was the dedication written on the manuscript, dedicated to his friend and student Therese von Brunswick. He called her Elise, as he was accustomed to giving his closest friends nicknames. its believed he proposed to her, but she turned him down. the piece was written about 1810, and he also dedicated the Piano Sonata #24 in F# minor Op. 78, which he named "A Therese" for her.

Leonore Overture No. 2. There are three "Leonore" overtures, and then the final Fidelio overture. The Leonore No. 3 is more often heard than the first two (and really the three are just versions of each other).

By the way, the Leonore No. 1 is one of the best things he ever wrote, in my opinion. You can find it on Itunes.
