These were real men in those days, dealing with the unknown. They didn't have the benefit of computer aided simulation, nor enyone else that "had been there before"
Today, everything is much safer, there's a wealth of knowledge available, that's whe we see all kinds of people attempting "dangerous" things in search of fame.
Back in those days, only heros did it...
A big applause for Donald Campbell, his crew, and England.
I'm so glad they tried... because they gave me priceless memories.

328 mph - Jet engine cut out. Without the thrust, he flipped. He went 15 ft in the air, then hit the water at 180mph.

On reading your first paragraph, I have tremendous respect for Campbell! I mean thinking about it they landed on the moon with much less than even 1mb of computer memory it was astonishing they even got back.
I had my kayaking lessons (outdoor persuits around that area), remembering Kayaking on Coniston and Windermere (great place I might add), without any disrespect to the great man. I remember one line an instructor said "if you find his body tell us" of course Donald's body.

ummm no they were not 'real' men, just stupid men doing stupid things for their own stupid egos...pretty much what ignorant, stupid men have been doing for centuries and still do today (my guess it's some kind of tiny penis syndrome)

The reason they have to make 2 attempts is because the judges take the mean speed of both. It's my understanding that on the return trip he didn't wait for the wave from the first run to subside, and it hit his boat after it'd rebounded off the shore with enough height to bring the boat up.

Ouch, that's one of the nastiest crashes you'll ever see. @JAMamation the body was found/recovered in 2001.
