What would happen if you stuck a 10 megaton thermonuclear bomb at the center of an asteroid that might otherwise collide with the Earth? A simulation run by Mark Boslough of Sandia National Labs.

I think we should seriously start thinking about methods to devert such disasters from hapenning right now, so we will be better prepared when this does happen in the future to save the earth!!!
Dude, the meteor is not that powerful, the impact energy is only about 500 megatons- about 9 times the largest nuclear detonation ever. The tsunami energy would be much less than the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. It would barely make it a mile on lowland areas. It could still ruin the lives of thousands of people, but hardly world ending.
Tsar Bomba was not the most efficcient design ever made, it was quickly put together in just a few months. Lawrence Livermore NL developed the mk 41 thermonuclear weapon which is 5.2 million times more effective than conventional explosives. It weighs about 5 tonnes and could be mounted on one of the larger ICBMs (DoE also said that they could develop a weapon which was about ~2x as effective as this bomb, which means that a 100 megaton design would only weigh 10 tonnes).
we are well on the way to being able to steer the earth away from such collisions...yes i said steer the earth. more exactly changing our magnetic field through chemtrails..this will deflect some of the rocks coming in and also as i said slow or change the orbit of mother earth
