This a clip from the movie "the horse in a gray flannel suit" in italian "il cavallo in doppio petto". The horse is Aberali, a thoroughbred rode by Col. Stefano Angioni in some of the most important showjumping competition of the sixties, after he continued his career under the saddle of Kathy Kusner (USA). Here is rode (very well) by Kathy.

This info is in a Steinkraus' book but it's not correct at all.The previous rider (Stefano Angioni) tried to contact him to correct this. With him he horse competed and won some of the most important competitions all over Europe and never stopped. He rode him in a special halter. 4 a problem in his mouth the horse couldn't accept the bit.Kathy rode him in a snaffle, and that's the point.Angioni tougth her how to ride without a bit(Aquisgrana,'67 few days before she became the European Champ.)

Very interesting. I did know the horse went in a hackamore. I am sorry if Steinkraus' book contained misinformation; I own the book and have read it many times. Steinkraus is a great horseman and very intelligent, but even he can make a mistake, I suppose! It's unfortunate that his error perpetuated a misconception about the horse. Now the book is out of print, I am sure.

Steinkraus' book is very nice. Some times mistakes happend, i don't think it was intentional. I know about the story directly from P.Angioni (Stefano's brother), that told about Aberali's training without a bit. Probably S.Angioni was one of the firsts that rode in gran prix in hackmore. Really it was more similar to a side pull than to a "metal" hackmore

I agree :) They have some really bad days and have issues like bad hooves and being weaker and not as big and strong, but when they're good, they're incredible. I wouldn't trade mine for anything

Aspercel does sound like a really good name for a horse.

Not that long ago Thoroughbreds were the main horses ridden in world class Grand Prix competitions. They are still widely used for eventing and were at the last Olympics. A well bred Thoroughbred is one hell of a horse for jumping
