First, Sweden was NOT average that year. Lots of good players. In the group phase they had drawn with Brazil, following our match they lost only 1-0 to them, before wiping the floor with Bulgaria.

Second, our team then had a problem with more defensively oriented teams. It was very counter attack focused. That was of course a weakness... but few teams dont have some.

I think Rom- Brazil would have been very open, similarly we would have lost to Italy i think.

i agree: sweden was a very strong team... they made the semi-finals in the 1992 european cup and gave brazil everything they could handle. italy would've beaten us with a healthy roberto baggio but he was injured in the match against spain and as we all saw, the injury affected the game with brazil profoundly when he missed his penalty kick. who knows? we can't go back and find out what would've happened but what we can say is that romania would've given ANY national team a serious game then!

Agreed. We were a match for any team that year (or those years), and I really genuinely believe we had a very strong chance of eliminating Brazil. I think our style of play was very well suited against South American teams in general.

Good times though no matter what, and in light of our recent results, I am appreciating that old team more than ever before :)

most specialists say that the only national team in the knockout stages that was present in 1994 that had a realistic chance to beat brazil in regulation time was romania because of our style of play and the the results we achieved against other south american teams. i think romania will once again climb to the top of the the football mountain soon. but we'll need time to rebuild. we have 2 much talent and love 4 the game to suck like this for too long. we need the right coach (mircea lucescu)
