"was" is past tense and could be misunderstood to mean, "I wish I used to be a lesbian." "Were" should be used because it is in the subjunctive tense. So instead of saying was, like it's gone and over with, were means it's past as well as present. Saying "I wish I am a lesbian" wouldn't make any sense. The subjunctive tense is not commonly used in English, most people use past tense when it should be subjunctive so it is often overlooked.
