Organ transplants have been being performed since some time in the second century BC. I'm fairly certain that organ transplants were commonplace in 1990.

they have been performed with very very high risks and most of it is due to the patient not coping with the new organs. Today there are drugs that help ahd ups the chances much much higher. Back then it was a big risk....

High risk does not equate to "no organ transplants." One should be mindful of syntax.
