Haydns music is just not all that catchy in modern ears, so it is not played so often, - not often enough.

prototypegmwt! Hayd underrated, you say? His work is considered a milestone in european music. Haydn is said to have completed the classical sonata and renewed and refined the quartet to perfection. That is credit!

In his days a composer still held the status of a craftsman and was hired almost as such. Beethoven corrected that.

Yes; Haydn is unfortunately the most underrated composer in Classical music.

Prettymuch! I guess he is overshadowed by Beethoven and Mozart, who probably had the greater natural talents. Still, his works deserve more attention.

You would think that someone so talented wouldn't have to struggle so much financially.

the Basset horn, which he used in the Requiem, is also woodwind, the equivelant of todays bass claranet

He wrote the Clarinet Concerto for it as well. But I'm not sure it could be considered the equivalent of modern bass clarinets, and the basset horn is still used and has a different range to a bass. It's nearer to the Alto Clarinet.

the bass clarinet is different from the basset clarinet. The range of the basset is much higher. What I'm saying is that the Basset horn/clarinet are very much like the modern soprano clarinet except it has more low notes.
