Reporter Ramita Navai and producer Siobhan Sinnerton travel through India exposing the horrific plight of the country's 170 million Dalits: literally "the broken people", and previously called "the untouchables"; who are at the bottom of India's caste system and are some of the most oppressed people on Earth. Economic growth has done little to improve the Dalits' lot; despite legislation, they still form 60 per cent of all those below the poverty line. Now, as Unreported World reports, Dalits are starting to fight for political power in an Indian civil rights movement.why is no one talking about this we were all up in arms about shilpa shetty the muslims got upset over a book and a cartoon and are always screaming about kashmir & palestine , the sikhs got upset over a play, but what about the plight of the dalits no one has said anyting.

Thank you. But I think we are all right. We have very bad Government here in India. But enough is enough, the whole thing should be changed. And the change if coming. And if India has to apply its true ancient wisdom the change will be positive. I don't hate the so called Higher Cast people. Because it is not because of them we are poor. All of you should read Periyar in order to understand india and racism. the upper caste Brhmins are different and dalit community, culture, and ways of practices are different. india is not one. it is divided by the caste system. racial differences are pretty much present in caste system. According to Hindu scriptures all the shudhras and untouchables are outsiders.They should not be contacted in any way. the purity of an individual depends in the caste in which he/she is born.

While nobody denies that this is terrible injustice, please see the plight of the muslims from Bihar in Pakistan, their lot is no better than this. Nor is the plight of the blacks in America any better. This is NOT an excuse to treat anybody badly. What I am asking is that this not be an excuse to convert people to a different religion, Instead there is a better solution to this , why not get the engineers to help build toilets all across India. Did you know there are allot of enemies of India one of the most feared is the High caste 'The Communist community' segregating or separating the poor and the rich. If a lower caste were to seek revenge for their rights in return death penalty or torture.
