Horses were, but Our Prophet's Muhammed S.A.W best animals were the cats. In quran it is mentioned that (well, i can't quote the exact verse) A human must never hurt a cat and if he hurts then it's a big curse for him and If a cat dies by a human's beating or actions then Muhammed S.A.W said that he can only forgiven if he builds a Golden Cat (Idol).
